Materials and Supplies

  • Sewing machine with straight stitch and zigzag, capable of sewing through 3 layers of your sweater fabric
  • Two pieces of sweater knit fabric, each a minimum of 21 inches wide x 14 inches long (53.5 cm wide x 36 cm long)*
  • Two pieces of sweater knit fabric, each a minimum of 6 inches wide x 8 inches long (15 cm wide x 20 cm long)*
  • Polyester thread in coordinating or contrasting color
  • Basic steam iron and ironing surface
  • Marking tool: erasable markers, chalk marker, tailor’s chalk, or a sliver of bar soap
  • Cutting tool: rotary cutter and mat or shears or electric scissors
  • Scissors for trimming 
  • Pattern weights or substitute 
  • Glass head pins or t-pins
  • Ball point sewing machine needles of appropriate size for your fabric (I usually use size 80/12 or 90/14 on sweater knits.)
  • Tape measure
  • Pattern for sample (provided in the "Preparing for Class" unit)

*Cutting up a large old or thrifted sweater will provide the perfect pieces for our class. Please check the "Reclaiming the Fabric from an Old or Thrifted Sweater" unit for tips on cutting sweater pieces for your sample.
